Races are starting to shape up for council posts in Oakdale and Riverbank for the November 2016 election, while incumbent Oakdale Mayor Cherilyn Bairos will be unopposed in her bid for reelection.

Bairos was the only candidate to pull and file papers for the Mayor’s post in Oakdale and will not face a challenger in November for another four-year term.

There are two four-year terms available on the Oakdale City Council and with just one of the incumbents filing, the original deadline of Aug. 7 was extended to 5 p.m. on Aug. 12.

Incumbent Kayleigh Gilbert filed to run in November; incumbent Richard Murdoch did not, allowing for the extension of the filing period.

Several other candidates have also filed papers and qualified for the ballot.

Along with Gilbert, candidates who have qualified so far include Mary Buchanan, Christopher Chavez, Benjamin Amaral and Fred Smith.

Oakdale has at-large elections, with no district boundaries, and the top two vote getters in the Nov. 3 election will win the seats. Papers were also pulled by Salvador Hernandez but as of press time Tuesday, Aug. 11 he had not yet qualified to be on the ballot.

There are also two available four-year seats on the Riverbank City Council, which does elect council members by district boundaries. Incumbent Luis Uribe is on the ballot, seeking reelection to his District 1 seat. Qualified challengers include Nai Nicholas Sosongkham, Sherry Fenn and Jeannette Reyes. Also pulling papers were Daymond Mayfield and George Serna, though neither had qualified for the November ballot as of press time.

The deadline for District 3 filing was extended through 5 p.m. on Aug. 12, as appointed incumbent John Pimentel did not file. Qualified candidates so far for the D3 seat include Carissa Commons and Sammi Martinez; Alex Rodriguez also pulled papers but had not yet qualified for the ballot.
