Oakdale Cross Country Boys Ranked Third In State

Runners of all ages will hit the streets in Riverbank for the annual Run for the Cheese in October, with sign-ups available now.

Coming off their historic week, the Oakdale High School varsity boys cross country team is currently ranked third in the state and 17th in the nation according to DyeStat, the prestigious website for high school cross country.

This week the boys got a bit of a rest but still competed in the Roughrider Invitational at Woodward Park in Fresno. The race took place on Friday night, Oct. 13. The boys competed in a five-kilometer race and placed eighth overall. Parker Whitemyer, a sophomore, finished in the top 25 of the field when he completed the race at 17:34 to place 25th overall. Freshman Quinn Baca placed 38th overall at 17:57 and senior Abner Gonzalez placed 44th overall at 18:03.

“We rested some runners this week and moved some up to the varsity level to get some experience,” said head coach Guy Fowler.

Now the team will put its focus on preparing for the VOL Championship, scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 25 at Mistlin Park in Ripon.

The varsity girls finished seventh overall in their meet. Sophomore Bradie Evans placed 18th overall at 20:38. Junior Ava Calandrio placed 38th overall at 21:37 and junior Audri Scott placed 45th overall at 21:55.

Saturday, Oakdale went to Hughson for the Hughson Supercross at Hughson High School. Freshman/sophomore girls competed in a 4000-meter race where Oakdale had a trio of freshmen finish as top 75 runners. Anavey Carson placed 48th overall at 21:12; Ruby Novotny placed 72nd at 23:27 and Isabel Logsdon placed 74th overall at 23:51. The freshman/sophomore boys also competed in a 4000-meter race. Oakdale had three freshman boys place in the top 70. Colton Renault placed 49th overall at 17:36. Seconds later Shawn Taylor crossed the line to finish 55th overall in 17:49. Leland Kruse placed 63rd overall at 18:27.
