Early Season Victories On Links For Golf Boys

Oakdale’s boys golf team is back on the course and off to a busy start to the 2017 season.

On Monday, Feb. 27 the boys went to Merced to take part in an 18-team tournament at Merced Golf and Country Club. As a team Oakdale shot 411 to place second. The Mustangs were eight strokes away from first place Turlock. For junior David Myrtakis it was a memorable day. Myrtakis shot 79 and won Longest Drive and Closest to the Hole for the entire tournament. Teammate Calvin Reed shot 78 on the day to lead the team. Also at the tournament were Zackary Tamburrino (83), Max Moore (85), MoeMoe Jaramillo (86) and Paul Goodreau (117).

On Wednesday, March 1 the boys opened Valley Oak League play against Lathrop at Oakdale Golf and Country Club. The boys knocked off the Spartans, who did not qualify as they were shorthanded. The Mustangs shot a team score of 209 in the contest through nine holes. Mrytakis (32), Reed (38), Moore (42), Tamburrino (45), Jaramillo (52), and Josh Barrera (54) all competed in the league opener for Oakdale. The next day Oakdale hosted Weston Ranch in a VOL showdown and took the contest 211-304. For the second time in as many rounds Myrtakis led the team with a score of 35 on the afternoon. Tamburrino (42), Reed (44), Moore (44), Jaramillo (46) and Goodreau (48) competed in the match.

Oakdale was scheduled to host The 2017 Oakdale Cup at Oakdale Golf and Country Club on Monday, March 6, with 18 teams from the region coming in for the annual event, after sports press time for The Leader. Wednesday, March 8 Oakdale continues their Valley Oak League season as they welcome the Raiders of Central Catholic and on Thursday, March 9 the boys host East Union. Tee time is set for 2:45 p.m.
