A Friday night accident along River Road claimed the life of an Oakdale man, as his vehicle hit a tree west of Cleveland Avenue.

According to the CHP, dispatchers received a call of a traffic collision on River Road, west of Cleveland, about 10:15 p.m. on Feb. 24. When officers out of the Modesto CHP office arrived on scene, they determined it was a solo vehicle fatality.

The 38-year-old man was driving a 2010 Chevrolet westbound on River Road, west of Cleveland, at a high rate of speed. For an unknown reason, the driver allowed the vehicle to leave the roadway on the north side of the road, colliding head on with a tree before coming to rest.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no other occupants or vehicles involved. It is unknown if alcohol and/or drugs were a contributing factor in the collision.

The investigation is continuing and anyone with information regarding the collision is asked to contact Officer A. Haskins at the Modesto CHP office, 209-545-7440, ext. 524.
