Tennis Team Wins First VOL Match

The Oakdale High School girls tennis team earned their first Valley Oak League victory this past week.

On Tuesday, Sept. 18 the girls defeated Weston Ranch 8-1 on the road. In the win five of their six singles competitors won and all three doubles teams were also victorious for the Lady Mustangs.

Kendra Branch won her match 6-0, 6-2 to get Oakdale in the win column. Lijian Bacud and McKenzie Brown each won their sets 6-0, 6-0. Shannen Yang won in straight sets 6-1, 7-6. Jessica Garcia earned a 6-0, 6-2 win. Tayla Barry lost her first set 0-6 but did not get discouraged as she forced a tiebreaker in the second set. Barry battled her way to a tiebreaker in the second set to fall 7-9 in the tiebreaker.

“She’s a tough girl. She wasn’t feeling that well but fought through it,” said head coach Grant Miller.

In doubles action the team of Paige Morgan and Alyossa Jingco won 6-2, 6-0. Jessica Jericoff and Savannah Gustafson earned a 6-3, 6-2 win and Tanna Borba and Katelyn Signorelli won 6-1, 6-0.

Thursday Sept. 20 the team traveled to Tracy where they fell to Kimball 8-1. Earning the team’s lone win were Jingco and Morgan in doubles. After dropping the first set 4-6, the girls won 6-1 and 6-2.

On Tuesday, Sept. 25 the girls hosted East Union. Their league match took place following The Leader’s press time. Oakdale will be off until Tuesday, Oct. 2 when they travel to Modesto to face Central Catholic. Oakdale is currently 1-6 in Valley Oak League play.

 

NOVICE TOURNAMENT

Oakdale’s future appears to be bright as three young Lady Mustangs took top three honors. The tournament took place on Saturday, Sept. 22 at Sierra where Chloe Chase placed first, followed by Elizabeth Padilla in second and Haley Gregory in third.
