Tennis Girls Open Valley Oak League Play With Split

The Oakdale High School girl’s tennis team has opened its 2018 season with a 1-1 record. The Lady Mustangs served up a 7-2 road win over East Union on Tuesday, Aug. 28, but fell in their home opener two days later against Kimball 5-4.

In the road win, the Lady Mustangs started strong as four of the six singles players earned victories. Kendra Branch won in straight sets over Nadia Carona 6-2, 6-1. Lijian Bacud also won in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. McKenzie Brown shut out Chloe Aguenda 6-0, 6-0. Jessica Garcia outlasted Jenny Garcia 6-0, 4-6, 6-4 to help lead Oakdale. Suffering losses in singles action were Tayla Barry when she lost to Isabel Moreno 5-7, 2-6. Senior Shannen Yang fell to Sara Gloekler 2-6, 2-6.

In doubles action Oakdale earned a clean sweep taking all three contests in straight sets. Paige Morgan and Alyossa Jingco defeated Maribelle Carranza and Savannah Hudson 6-1, 6-0. Katelyn Signorelli and Jessica Jericoff defeated Angelica Morales and Karina Schambeck 6-2, 6-3. Ending the day on a high note were Tanna Borba and Savannah Gustafson, as they defeated Ariana Pacheco and Mena Guevara 6-0, 6-2.

Against Kimball, Oakdale had mixed results in singles. Tayla Barry regrouped from her loss earlier in the week and came out strong winning 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 10-7 over Maxine Jaque. Kendra Branch took three sets to defeat Hana Lucero 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 to remain unbeaten in league play. Things headed south for Oakdale as Bacud, Brown, Garcia and Yang all fell to the visitors. Bacud, Brown and Garcia all lost in straight sets, and Yang fell in three.

Oakdale needed all three doubles teams to win in order to win the match, but came up short. The team of Paige Morgan and Alyossa Jingco defeated Deeksha Shakya and Tiffany Nguyen 6-4, 5-7 (tie-breaker 10-6.) Also earning a team win for Oakdale were Tanna Borba and Savannah Gustafson as they defeated Sarah Wilkinson and Cailyne Lacangelo 6-4, 7-5. Coming up short in their match were Katelyn Signorelli and Jessica Jericoff, who lost to Angel Au and Kate Blumerfeld 1-6, 4-6.

On Tuesday, Sept. 4 Oakdale hosted Gregori in non-league play following The Leader’s press time. Oakdale returns to Valley Oak League play on Thursday, Sept. 6 as they host Sierra. They continue their four game homestand when they host Central Catholic on Tuesday, Sept. 11. All matches are scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Oakdale High School.
