This past weekend the 2018 Mid-Cal in Gilroy took place. The big two-day wrestling event featured top wrestling talent from across the state, including a handful of Oakdale Mustangs who placed in the top eight of their weight classes. As a team Oakdale placed eighth overall scoring 128.5 team points. Poway finished in first place scoring 360.5 points.
Finishing in second place in the 138-pound division was Ricky Torres. He advanced to the finals but came up short in that match against Dawson Sihavong of Bullard 10-4. Junior Torres is currently 27-9 on the season.
Freshman Henry Porter placed fourth overall in the 120-pound division. Porter fell to Devin Murphy of Clovis North 4-1 in the hard fought battle for third-fourth place honors. Porter is now 30-7 in his first season on the mats for OHS.
Junior Gabe Martinez defeated Russel Rucklos of Foothill Palo Cedro 5-1 to place fifth over the weekend. Martinez wrestled in the 170-pound division and is 27-9 on the year.
At 182 pounds Cody Golding placed sixth at Gilroy. In the fifth place match he lost 9-0 to Jack Kilner of Granada. Golding holds a record of 30-9 on the season and is a junior.
Jorge Barajas placed eighth this past weekend at 220 pounds. The senior lost to Peerliss Brooke of Lower Lake 5-0. Barajas is 20-5 on the year.
This Saturday, Oakdale will compete in the Sac-Joaquin Section Duals at Lincoln High School of Stockton. This is the first of four postseason events leading up to the CIF State Championship in Bakersfield on March 2 and 3.
