Oakdale hosted the 2017 Valley Oak League Championship Tournament this past week, closing out the season on their home court.

Singles were held on Tuesday, Oct. 24 where Sierra’s Kaitlyn Rausa captured first place honors. Oakdale’s girls struggled to get out of the first round.

On Thursday, Oakdale’s doubles team of Tayla Barry and Lijian Bacud took fourth place overall. Barry and Bacud defeated East Union’s Nicole Meza-Burno and Carmen Tantares 8-2. They then went on to beat Manteca’s Makenna Condit and Shilba Kaui 7-5, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. The girls lost to Manteca’s number one team in the semifinals in straight sets. Barry and Bacud lost 3-6, 5-7 to Koryn Menasco and Taylor Corona.

“The girls played very well together,” Oakdale coach Judy Vejar said. “This was their first time pairing together and they were remarkable. They took their game to the next level for sure.”

Barry and Bacud were the only two to advance in the competition. Oakdale finished the regular season with a record of 7-7.
