Oakdale Youth Wrestlers Grapple For State Honors

Nearly two dozen Oakdale youth wrestlers placed at the 2017 State of California Wrestling Alliance for the Youth (SCWAY) State Meet in Clovis. The three day tournament took place at Buchanan High School and featured young wrestlers from kindergarten to eighth graders.

Seventeen Oakdale wrestlers placed at the annual event. The competitors are divided into age groups and weight classes. They start off with the five-and-six year olds and go to middle school. Taking first place in the middle school 118 pound division was Henry Porter. More success came out of the middle school division as Brayden Abell (95 pounds) and Seth Borba (126 pounds) placed second in the meet. Placing fourth in the middle school division were Michael Torres (85 pounds) and Clayton Bashor (106 pounds). Jackson King (118 pounds) placed seventh in the middle school division.

The youngest Oakdale wrestler that placed in the tournament was Zeke Meza, who wrestles at 50 pounds, and placed fourth among the five- and six-year-olds. Josh Brown earned a third place finish among the seven- and eight-year-olds (68 pounds). The nine- and 10-year-old group had four top 10 placers in Brodie Johnson (85 pounds, fifth place), Carson Sundberg (64 pounds, sixth place), Scott Beadles (85 pounds, seventh place) and Tyler Abell (70 pounds, eighth place).

Five Oakdale wrestlers battled their way into the top 10 in the 11- and 12-year-old division. Jonathan Hernandez (86 pounds) and Spencer Von Savoye (90 pounds) each placed third. Lexy Beadles (114 pounds) placed fifth, Titan Ginger (90 pounds) placed sixth and Eli Elting (65 pounds) finished seventh.
