The regular season for the Oakdale boys golf team began on Wednesday, Feb. 28 against Sierra. The season opener took place at Oakdale Golf and Country Club where the Mustangs defeated the Wolves 213-287.

“Getting the first league match in and having a favorable outcome is always nice. This will give us a starting point for the team to see how much we can improve individually and as a team,” said Coach Lee McGhee.

Led by freshman Ryan Meyer, who shot a match low 34 on the day, Oakdale opened the season on the right path.

“Ryan Meyer started off in his first league match with three birdies and only one bogey to shoot two under par 34. It is nice to be able to add that to a team that has five returning varsity players that went 13-1 last year,” added McGhee. “Coming in as a freshman Ryan already has some big tournament experience, having played in many events at all levels of junior golf. It will be fun to watch him mix it up as a part of our team. Adding his confidence to our team will be a huge factor in our success this season.”

David Myrtakis shot a 39 against Sierra, with both Max Moore and Tristan Jaramillo at 46. Also taking the course were Calvin Reed (48) and Jack Verdegaal (51).

“As a team our guys are getting comfortable on the course each day and hopefully will be able to use that to their advantage as we play in competition. Coach (Tim) Meyer and I have high expectations for our whole team and look forward to accomplishing as much as we possibly can this year as we strive to improve each and every day,” McGhee said.

On Monday, March 5 the Mustangs were scheduled to host The Oakdale Cup. This year marks the fifth annual tournament and 20 teams were expected to participate. The event was scheduled following The Leader’s press time. In 2017 the Mustangs took first place in the tournament. Schools from the Sac-Joaquin Section came from as far as the Sacramento area to compete.

Oakdale returns to Valley Oak League action when they host both Manteca and East Union this week. On Wednesday, March 7 the Mustangs take on the Buffaloes and Thursday, March 8 the boys host the Lancers. Both matches are scheduled for a 2:45 p.m. start time at Oakdale Golf and Country Club.
