With a 3-1 lead at the half, Oakdale’s varsity soccer girls cruised to a 6-2 victory over visiting Ceres in the opening round of the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division 3 playoffs.

The Valley Oak League champion Lady Mustangs clinched the two seed and opened their playoff run at home on Saturday, Feb. 10 as they hosted Ceres. Oakdale earned a 6-2 first round victory.

Getting the party started early, Kyndra Obermeyer sent the ball to the back of the net on a header less than four minutes in to the contest to put the home team up 1-0. It was a 2-0 lead on a score from Dakota Burford with about 15 minutes elapsed in the contest. A corner kick by Mia Peterson resulted in another score off an Oakdale header with 11:39 to go in the opening half, and though Ceres notched a goal late in the first, Oakdale remained in control for the contest, outscoring the visitors by the same 3-1 margin in the second half.

With the 6-2 victory, Oakdale moves on to the second round. They are scheduled to host the number seven seed, Ponderosa, on Wednesday, Feb. 14 at 6 p.m.

Ponderosa was a 3-2 first round winner over number 10 seed Pioneer.

Other remaining teams in the tournament include top seed West Park, number three Manteca, number four Rio Americano, five seed Vista del Lago, number six Christian Brothers and number eight seed Roseville.

A second-round win over Ponderosa by the Lady Mustangs on Feb. 14 would give Oakdale the opportunity to host the winner of the Manteca - Christian Brothers second round match. That game would be on Friday, Feb. 16 in the semifinals, scheduled for 6 p.m.

The championship game is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 22 at 5 p.m. at Cosumnes River College.
