Medals Won At Elementary Science Olympiad

Fair Oaks Elementary School recently won the Elementary Science Olympiad, out of 20 teams, bringing home their third championship in the past five years. The Fair Oaks team consisted of 17 members and was coached by teachers Danny Rogers and Mary White. Fair Oaks had 10 students medal in six events.

“Students practiced one or two days a week, for an hour each, depending on how many events they participated in,” explained Rogers about their preparation for the event. “All students had two events each and some participated in three. They practiced from November until April. Some students also practiced and studied on their own and at home.”

He added that many of the Fair Oaks team members were veteran team members.

Magnolia Elementary School sent 16 team members to the contest and placed seventh overall. The team was coached by teacher Jeannette Ves’sells. The school had 10 team members medal in six events.

Sierra View Elementary School had 18 students compete at the event and took eighth place overall, just 24 points behind Fair Oaks. Sierra View had 11 students medal in six different events. The team was coached by teachers Cheri Martin and Chris Frazee.

Medals were awarded for first through fifth places, which are listed below by school.

Fair Oaks

First places: Anatomy, Brian Anglim and Tanner Corson; Clay Boats, Race McGinnis and Chase Fields; Write It/Do It, Liz White and Anne Homer.

Fourth: Orienteering, Emily Turner and Savannah Manning.

Fifth: Can Race, Anne Homer and Savannah Manning; Rock Hound, Samantha Ho and Samantha Victorio.

Magnolia

Second places: Bridge Building, Salena Deane Montalvo and Shannen Yang; Clay Boats, Sadie Bell and Hannah Rodgers.

Fourth: Food Web/Owl Pellets, Emma Burke, Malina Gayton, and Jacob Petersen; Straw Egg Drop, Emma Burke and Salena Deane Montalvo; Water Rockets, Ryan Kummer and Shannen Yang.

Fifth: Leaf and Tree Finder, Rebekah DeCavit and Marylee Humke-Walden.

Sierra View

First places: Crime Busters, Hailey Brown and Kyle Carpenter; Bridge Building, Sam Medlin and Savannah Larsen.

Third: Water Rockets, Hope Kindred, Haley Walker, and Blake Morgan; Orienteering, David Myrtakis and Emma Magnussen; Can Race, Carson Frazee and Kristen Reid.

Fourth: Write It/Do It, Hope Kindred and Blake Morgan.
