Astronomy in the Park nights scheduled through December

Do some stargazing and learn about the night sky during the popular Astronomy in the Park programs, put on through the Stockton Astronomical Society, Oak Grove Docent Council and San Joaquin County Parks and Recreation.

The next event is set for Saturday, Aug. 22 at sunset, 7:45 p.m., and will feature the moon, Venus for the first hour, M13 (Star Cluster in Hercules), with the Deep sky object M57, Ring Nebula.

All events are hosted at Shumway Oak Grove Regional Park, 4520 W. Eight Mile Road, Stockton. There is a $6 cash parking fee but the Astronomy Nights are admission free. Bring a blanket and chairs; Stockton Astronomical Society will bring the telescopes. Events are canceled in the event of rain.

On the schedule for Saturday, Sept. 19, with sunset at 7:05 p.m., view the moon, Saturn after 9:30 p.m., M13 Star Cluster in Hercules, and the Deep sky object visible at 9 p.m., M57 Ring Nebula.

Saturday, Oct. 17, sunset at 6:30 p.m.; view the moon, Saturn, M13 Star Cluster, and at 8 p.m., the Deep sky object M27, Dumbbell Nebula.

Saturday, Nov. 14, sunset at 5 p.m., visible objects will be the moon, Saturn, with Mercury possible at sunset, as well as the M13 Star Cluster.

Closing out the year, join in for the final Astronomy Night on Saturday, Dec. 12 with sunset at 4:45 p.m.; view the moon, Saturn and the Deep sky object M31 Andromeda Galaxy.
