Wrestling Mustangs Slam Division III Competition

This past weekend Oakdale High School wrestlers took on the best in the division at Atwater High School. For two days, grapplers battled it out on the mats in the 2018-2019 Sac-Joaquin Section Division III Championships and for nine Mustang wrestlers, they stood tall above the rest.

Nine of the OHS wrestlers competing were crowned champions in their individual brackets. Brayden Abell (106), Michael Torres (113), Clayton Bashor (120), Ceasar Garza (126), Henry Porter (132), Ricky Torres (138), Seth Borba (145), Gabe Martinez (170) and Cody Golding (190) all went undefeated in the weekend tournament.

Abell, a sophomore, went 4-0 over the two days and defeated Danny Myles of Oakmont in the finals via pin fall. Freshman Michael Torres went 4-0 on his way to becoming a champion. Torres defeated David Granados, a senior, in the championship match. The thrilling victory for Torres resulted in a 10-7 victory.

Sophomore Bashor went 4-0 and clinched the championship with a pin fall over Del Campo freshman Ethan Boyd in the finals. Freshman Garza defeated junior Levi Burnett of Vista Del Lago 7-1 in the finals. Sophomore Porter continued his dominant season with a 10-7 victory over Patterson’s Noah Mirelez in the finals.

Ricky Torres, a senior, went unbeaten over the weekend and capped off his day with an 8-3 victory over fellow senior Michael Miller of Central Valley. Sophomore Borba battled fellow sophomore Erik Johnson of Vista Del Lago in the finals with Borba’s hand being raised in triumph following his 6-3 finals victory.

Senior Martinez defeated Sean Myles of Oakmont in the finals. Martinez earned a 6-1 victory to become champion.

Rounding out the championship-filled day was Golding as he defeated a Valley Oak League foe from Central Catholic, Sergio Bravo. The two seniors met in the finals and it was Golding getting the pin fall.

Others who made the trip were Jordan Van Rys (152 pounds, placed sixth); Francisco Perez (160, placed sixth), Beau Osmundson (182, placed ninth), Ben Molina (220, placed third) and Eric DeGraff (heavyweight, placed tenth). With Oakdale’s impressive performance, the team took first overall.

In women’s competition it was Faalia Martinez and Valerie Osborne claiming the Regional Championships.

This weekend Oakdale travels to Delta College in Stockton for the 2018-2019 Sac-Joaquin Section Masters.
