In their only match of the week, the Oakdale High School varsity girls soccer team lost by a 7-1 final to first place Sierra. Oakdale (5-8-2, 2-7-0) hosted Sierra (18-1-0, 8-0) on Monday night, Jan. 27 where the visiting Timberwolves overpowered the Lady Mustangs. Oakdale scored their lone goal in the first half, with Maquel Besson netting the score. Sierra, however, proved to be too much for Oakdale and junior Tiana Cello was a big part of it. Cello scored five goals and had an assist in the road win. The visitors scored three goals in the first half, four in the second.

“Maquel Besson had a great finish and Kendra Branch did a great job out on the field tonight,” said Oakdale head coach Grace Fernandes. “The girls will need to regroup as we close out league play in the next two weeks. Hopefully with some better results.”

The loss to Sierra was the team’s third consecutive loss.

Oakdale was slated to take on last place Weston Ranch (0-14-2, 0-8-0) on Monday, Feb. 3 in Stockton at 5:45 p.m.; the game was played after The Leader’s sports press time. Oakdale will wrap up the season with a pair of home games. Wednesday, Feb. 5 the girls will host Kimball (11-7-1, 5-2-1) and the season finale is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 12 when they welcome in the Lady Raiders of Central Catholic (4-8-2, 2-7-0). The season finale against Central Catholic will also be Senior Night 2020 for the team, with recognition for the squad’s seniors.

JUNIOR VARSITY

The Oakdale junior varsity team lost a tough contest, 2-0, to Sierra on Monday night. Sierra scored a goal in each half to earn the road win.

“Sierra played well and our girls did as well, just one of the goals was a loose high ball in the box that our goalie just couldn’t snag,” said Oakdale head coach Joey Micheletti.

With that loss, the team is now 4-4-1 in Valley Oak League play. Oakdale’s JV girls were slated to host Weston Ranch on Monday, Feb. 3.
