Some wins and some losses have been put on the books for a number of Oakdale High sports teams, as they play their way through the spring schedule.
The volleyball boys have had their struggles, with just a single league victory so far, while baseball took some losses against Manteca. The softball girls notched wins at both the varsity and JV levels, and the tennis team also put away a pair of Valley Oak League opponents.
Here is a look at the recent competition.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
It has been a rough couple of weeks for the young program. The OHS varsity volleyball boys have dropped seven straight matches. This past week Oakdale lost to VOL foes Patterson and Manteca, both in 3-0, 3-0 fashion. This coming off a pair of road losses including a three-set loss at Mountain House.
In their road loss to Mountain House, Oakdale was down 2-5 after Mountain House hit the ball out of bounds. Armando Meza notched an ace for Oakdale to make it 3-5. Iker Juarez hit an ace for Oakdale, putting the Mustangs down 6-8. Lucas Freitas then found a hole in the defense to make it a 7-9 game. Mountain House went on a run to make it a 22-11 lead for the home team Mustangs, resulting in a time out for Oakdale. Ultimately, Oakdale lost the first set 11-25 and fell in set two, 14-25, with a 13-25 final in set three. Carter Birchall had an ace and getting some good blocks were Meza and Chaleb Leon.
The loss on the home court to Manteca on March 30 came with scores of 17-25, 18-25 and 10-25; the loss to Patterson was by a 17-25, 20-25, 14-25 sweep.
The squad will be back in action at East Union on Monday, April 13 and then return home for a contest against Sierra on April 15 and wrap up the week at Central Catholic the following night. The trio of matches are scheduled for a 6 p.m. start time.
The varsity boys are 1-6 in league, 6-19 overall.
BASEBALL
After a decisive 13-2 win on the home field to start their three-game series with Manteca on March 30, the Oakdale varsity baseball boys then fell on hard times and were shut out in the next two contests, falling to the Buffaloes by a 4-0 final on April 1, 8-0 on April 2.
At Manteca, the boys managed just one hit and a four-run fifth inning by the host Buffaloes proved to be enough for them to get the April 1 win.
Back home on April 2, the Thursday game saw Oakdale manage four hits but they couldn’t get any runs across the plate. Manteca scored three in the first, four in the fourth and added an insurance run in the seventh.
The varsity boys ended the week at 8-4 in Valley Oak League play, 12-6 overall and this week are hosting the annual Mark Dickens Tournament, with games scheduled against Buhach Colony, Los Banos and Escalon, Tuesday through Thursday, with Friday’s opponent to be determined.
They will get back to league play hosting Central Catholic on Monday, April 13 at 4 p.m.
Meanwhile, the JV boys kept up their winning ways and now stand at 12-0 in league, 16-1 overall. They were 4-0 winners at home against Manteca on March 30, defeated the Buffaloes 11-8 on the road April 1 and won 16-4 at home on April 2.
Action for the freshmen saw them win 13-3 at Patterson on March 30, 9-4 at Linden on April 2.
SOFTBALL
Oakdale’s varsity Lady Mustangs were 10-3 winners against Patterson on April 2 and edged out Manteca, 2-1, on April 6.
The girls used a five run fifth inning to defeat Patterson in the Thursday contest and collected 13 total hits in the contest. Senior Reese Donaldson had four hits and three runs scored to lead the attack, while Holly Conde had a double and drove in four runs. Jazz Gayton added two RBI on the afternoon.
In the one-run victory over Manteca on Monday, senior Emily Thomasson was the winning pitcher, going the distance. Oakdale scored two runs in the second and made them stand up, though Manteca made it close with a single run in the top of the seventh.
Oakdale improved to 5-1 in Valley Oak League play with the wins and are now 8-6 overall.
They were scheduled to play at Mountain House on April 8.
The JV girls also picked up a pair of wins and enjoyed an outstanding week at the plate. The squad won 14-3 over Patterson, scoring 14 runs with 14 hits; they then rapped out 19 hits in a 15-8 win at home over Manteca.
TENNIS
For the varsity tennis boys, they continue to put together a strong campaign. They shut out both their opponents this past week. They were on the road and crafted a 9-0 victory at Manteca on Wednesday, April 1 and came away with a 9-0 win the next day, defeating Central Catholic on the road on Thursday, April 2.
The team is scheduled to host Patterson in a 3 p.m. match on Monday, April 13.
