This week, we introduce a new summer series – Memorable Mustangs – that covers former Oakdale High School student-athletes that made an impact in Mustangs history over the last 15 years.
First up, from the class of 2012: Manuel Hernandez.
A multi-sport athlete for the Mustangs, Hernandez competed in football, basketball and track and field. He represented the Mustangs all four years and even holds a school record in track and field.
In his senior year, Hernandez advanced to the CIF State Track and Field Meet where he set an Oakdale High School record of six feet, 10¼ inches in the high jump.
“The old record was 6 foot 8 and at Masters I broke the record with a jump of 6 foot 9; then at state I broke my own record,” Hernandez said. “It was always my mindset and goal to have a record of some kind. With my sibling attending OHS I wanted to leave a mark. It’s cool to see my name in the gym on the record board.”
During his football days he played offense, defense and special teams. His senior year he played defense primarily as a cornerback. Hernandez was named Valley Oak League Corner of the Year his senior season. He credits both head coach Trent Merzon and coach Tim Meyer for bestowing some valuable life lessons.
“Both Merzon and Meyer helped me with leadership and discipline, and I have carried that with me post high school,” the OHS alum said.
He played in back-to-back Section Championship games his junior and senior years as well.
Following his days at Oakdale High School; Hernandez attended Modesto Junior College where he competed in track and field. Today, Hernandez is married with two children and has a career in agriculture. His hobbies include fantasy football, yard work and being a super fan of the Baltimore Ravens.
Hernandez said the biggest challenge since graduating high school has been adapting to the ‘real’ world.
“While you’re in school, you really do not think about the real world or responsibilities; at least I did not. I thought I had it made,” shared Hernandez. “However, bills, work, medical; it all comes at you and it comes hard.”
Hernandez said that he would like to share some advice with young student athletes: “Get off your phones. People lived a long time without phones, tablets and other devices and did just fine. Live in the moment and take a look around you.”
