Spring Success Continues For Multiple Mustang Squads

Oakdale prep athletes were at their best in the past week in huge Valley Oak League and tournament performances. Following is a summary of Mustang action in track and field, golf, baseball and tennis. Track And FieldJaci Powell and Tim House each earned a trip to the high school record book with thrilling performances at the highly competitive Meet of Champions in Sacramento on Saturday.Powell tied a school record with her second place 15.24-second time in the 110 hurdles while House set a new school best with a 169 foot, 4 inch winning toss of the discus.Powell was also fourth in the triple jump while Juli Powell finished eighth in the discus. Nate Madsen finished third in the high jump.The team was fresh off a tough boys defeat and girls victory in a dual with Sierra on Wednesday.Jaci Powell won the triple jump, long jump and the 100 hurdles while Juli Powell won the pole vault. Me'che Brown took the 100 and anchored the 400 relay team to victory.Sara Aguayo was tops in the 300 hurdles while Jaylene Ponce took honors in the shot put and Ashlyn Durham ran to wins in the1600 and the 3200.Tim House won the shot put and the discus to lead the Oakdale boys while James Evans won the pole vault and Nate Madsen took the 110 hurdles.Oakdale will be back at Sierra for the VOL championships on Saturday. GolfOakdale (15-1 VOL, 19-3-1 overall) upended East Union in 208-217 form on Wednesday to lead the VOL title race by two with only the league championship tournament remaining.That league showdown was waged on Tuesday, though results were not available at press time.Austin Whitworth shot a 36 on Wednesday to pace the Mustangs to the key league win. Ian Stogdell carded a 41 while Connor Gust shot a 43. Kyle Derby and Michael Tripp each ended in 44 strokes. BaseballThe Mustangs (11-1, 17-6) made a statement by ousting Sierra in 7-2, 8-2 games last week, and hosted Manteca (9-3, 14-7-1) on Tuesday, though results were not available at press time.Tanner Combs belted a first-inning, two-run home run against Sierra on Thursday. He added eight strikeouts from the hill and stifled Timberwolves hitters in a complete game victory.“He has got to be a bulldog for us coming down the stretch right here,” Oakdale coach Hondo Arpoika said. “He’s got to get after it and he’s got to want the ball and never want to come off the hill.”Oakdale is at Manteca on Thursday. The Mustangs close the season with a huge series against Sonora next week. TennisOakdale avenged a loss to East Union in early league play with a 3-2 win over the Lancers last week.Daniel Dunning rebounded from a 1-6 loss to Sean Hilscher with 6-1, 6-0 wins from the No. 1 singles position. Blake Dunn added 6-2, 6-4 wins over Ricky Peloso while Josh Firstbrook upended Steven Sheperd in 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 scores.Oakdale’s doubles tandem of Paul Perrone and Jared Firstbrook lost 3-6, 2-6 decisions while Jeremy Willinger and Chandler Johnson fell in 3-6 scores.Oakdale took on the VOL singles tournament at Sierra on Tuesday, though results were not available at press time. The league doubles tournament is Thursday at Sierra as well.
