Oakdale High School senior Jake Mendoza has thought long and hard about his future. The former Mustang soccer standout made his decision on Friday, Feb. 16 with his friends, family and former teammates on hand at Ferrarese’s Deli Restaurant in Oakdale. The senior signed with California State University Stanislaus to be a member of the school’s soccer program.

“The great coaching staff at CSUS is what sold me on my decision. I worked with them before and they should get a lot of the credit for what kind of soccer player I am today,” said Mendoza.

He has been playing soccer since the age of four in Oakdale and played on the Oakdale varsity soccer team his junior season as a forward.

“Soccer is a team sport, other sports a single player can make the difference but in soccer it takes everyone. I think that’s why I love the sport so much,” said Mendoza.

During his time with the Mustangs Mendoza played in 23 games and scored a total of 20 points on six goals and eight assists.

“My time with the Mustangs was fun. I really liked playing with my friends and under Coach Alfredo Quiroga,” said Mendoza.

He took his senior year off from soccer to focus on his school work and prepare for the college level.

“Mendoza is a raw talent in soccer. CSUS is lucky to have him,” former teammate and current Mustang soccer player Izzy Valero said.

Although Mendoza is currently undecided on what he will be majoring in while at CSUS, he looks forward to the rest of his Oakdale High School days.

“It’s only about three months left in the school year and I am going to miss it greatly. I will miss my friends and the teachers here. The teachers care about the students and I am very grateful to have attended Oakdale High School.”

Last season the CSUS boys soccer team finished with a record of 6-6-5 in collegiate play.
