Freshman, JV Boys Earn Gridiron Wins

The lower level Oakdale High School football programs picked up wins this past week.

Thursday night, Sept. 5 the freshman team hosted Hughson in non-conference play. After trailing 7-0 early, Oakdale took a 14-7 advantage on just two plays from scrimmage and never looked back on the way to a 49-7 home win.

Leading the way for Oakdale were Mick Merzon, Carlos Baez, Chris Thompson, Brock Osmundson, Devin Rowe, Zachary Stott and Alex Jones. This week the team will host Palma on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m.

Oakdale’s freshmen are now 3-0 on the season.

For the junior varsity team, it was a 34-14 road win against Aptos on Friday, Sept. 6. Jose Torres got things rolling for Oakdale on a three-yard rushing touchdown with 8:51 left in the first quarter. Torres found the end zone for the second time in the opening quarter on a 32-yard rush. Yahir Ayala found the end zone twice, from 11 and seven yards out to give Oakdale a 27-0 lead in the third quarter. Kevin Camelin displayed his speed on a 57-yard rushing play with 3:49 remaining in the third quarter.

Aptos added two fourth quarter touchdowns to avoid the shutout loss.

Defensively, Hunter Olsen, Jake Kettering, Dalton Vargas, Jack Kjeldgaard, Titan Ginger and Rocky Richardson all helped the team pick up the road win.

Oakdale’s junior varsity team is now 2-1 on the season and will host Palma on Friday evening with a 5 p.m. start time.
