Hazel Slayter

Hazel Ruth Slayter, 95, died suddenly in Oakdale on Friday, Jan. 27.

She was born in Stroud, Okla. to Grover Willey and Eulalia McDonald. She was a resident of Laurel Crest Manor assisted living center in Oakdale where she had lived since September 2010.

In the early 1920s, she, along with her family, moved to Eugene, Ore. where she only stayed a short time before moving to the Knights Ferry/Oakdale area where they had family and friends. In Oakdale she met and married Walter W. Dunn.

In early 1935, she moved to Tracy where she met and married Sylvester M. Slayter November 7, 1937. They were married for 66 years until her husband’s death in 2003. They were residents of Livingston for 50 years.

Ms. Slayter enjoyed playing all sorts of card and board games, square dancing, and was very active in the senior citizens center. She was a wonderful cook and the family looked forward to spending the holidays at her home in Livingston.

The family thanks staff and residents at Laurel Crest Manor for the care she was given during her stay in Oakdale, and extends special thanks to Tracy Kelton who always made sure she felt special.

She is survived by the six children of her blended family, Patricia A. Dunn (William) Copeland of Jamestown, Leon Slayter of Atwater, Gerald (Joann) Slayter, Marlon (Donna) Slayter, Gary (Ann) Slayter all of Manteca, Darlene Slayter (John) Wilson of Tracy; 17 grandchildren; and many great and great-great grandchildren

A gravesite service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday Feb. 25 at the Winton Cemetery, Winton.
