Evelyn Louise Shatswell, 67, died Monday, May 6 after a year-and-a-half battle with carcinoid cancer and subsequent heart problems.
She was born in Claremore, Oklahoma to Earl and Alma Brannan. When she was four, the family moved to Kent, Washington where she completed school with a 4.0 grade point average and was valedictorian of her graduating class.
She married Bill Shatswell of Oakdale in 1961 and they had four children. She and her husband lived in Oakdale for about five years prior to moving to Modesto.
Mrs. Shatswell served faithfully in numerous Christian ministries over the years, though her family was her first ministry. She operated a daycare out of their home to put their children through a Christian school. The family began serving together through music and became involved in missions in communist countries.
She taught Sunday School most of her life and was active in different children’s ministries. She was also the director of adult and children’s choirs. After her children were grown she became a ventriloquist and ‘Marci’ became her traveling companion. Her greatest passion was her love for her savior Jesus Christ and this was the fuel for her involvement in the many mission trips. Her health battles drew her closer in her relationship with the Lord and His Word was a constant source of strength.
She is survived by her husband, Bill; children, Karen, Julie, Lori, and Gary, and three of their spouses; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many in-laws, nieces, nephews, and others.
A celebration of life was held June 4 at Calvary Chapel, Modesto.
Remembrances may be made in her honor to missionaries Jim and Margie Stewart, CC Vista, 885 E. Vista Way, Vista, CA 92084.
