Alfred ‘Al’ Vegas, 88, died Thursday, May 12 at Oak Valley Hospital.

He was a lifelong resident of Oakdale.

Mr. Vegas served in the U.S. Army with the Night Fighter Squadron for three-and-a-half years.

He was plant manager for the Oakdale Concrete and Pipe Co. for 32 years. When it sold, he worked for Joe Powel Construction and later for Turlock Concrete. He retired in 1986.

After retirement, he collected cans. He went to the high school, made friends with the students, and was known as the can man. He made a lot of friends and was happy doing so.

He was secretary for the F.E.S. of Oakdale for approximately 10 years.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Ann; son, Bob Vegas of Oakdale; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe Vegas, Sr. and Mary Vegas; and two brothers.

At his request, private graveside services.
