Oakdale’s Gene Bianchi Community Center was all abuzz on Wednesday, June 14 as the Stanislaus Senior Foundation partnered with the Gladys Lemmons Senior Center and the City of Oakdale to present Senior Information Day.
The event was hosted for senior citizens in the Oakdale community and surrounding areas. According to Stanislaus Senior Foundation President Billie Scott, a similar event was sponsored in Oakdale in years prior, yet has not been hosted since the pandemic. A similar info day for seniors is also presented in Modesto.
“It’s just something that if you don’t have a lot of mobility or transportation it would be hard for people from Oakdale to get there,” Scott shared of the Modesto gathering.
According to Scott close to 150 seniors attended the event and were treated to information from 35 varying vendors.
“Vendors did do a sponsorship to be there, but all of that money goes back to helping needy seniors in Stanislaus County,” Scott shared, noting that Stanislaus Senior Foundation, as a 501c3 non-profit, used the event as a fundraiser.
Scott further shared she felt the info day was important for seniors, with a lot of information available.
“I think for our seniors to know what resources are out there for them,” Scott said of the event’s importance. “Anything from continuing education, to exercise programs, health awareness, hearing exams. A lot of times their insurance has benefits for them, that they don’t know about.”
All vendors in attendance were strictly for information and education of the senior attendees.
“We really pride ourselves on that it’s not an event for someone to sell at. It’s really an event to tell them what is offered to them and what is out there,” the organizer said.
Now entering her sixth month as Stanislaus Senior Foundation Board President, Scott shared she expects the event to be even bigger and better next year. She complimented members of the Senior Center, as well as the City for working with her the past few months to bring the info day together.
“It was definitely a group effort by far.”
