The following is a listing of some of the local calls for service involving the Modesto Fire Department, which staffs Stations 27, 28, 29 and 30 in Oakdale, Knights Ferry and Valley Home as part of Battalion 5; and the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Department, covering the Riverbank area, as part of Battalion 2. Note: Shifts are in 24-hour time periods, from 5 a.m. to 5 a.m.
Calls were logged during the time period of Tuesday, Sept. 8 through Monday, Sept. 14. Days not listed had no reports of significant incidents in this area.
MONDAY, SEPT. 14
Battalion 2: OES 4618 was released from the Plaskett incident and returned home after a 14-day deployment.
Captain Zurilgen is assigned to the McCully incident in Oregon working as a base camp manager.
Crews performed Monday engine inspections.
Battalion 5: Crews performed company level training in their respective FMA’s and conducted Monday apparatus checks and station maintenance.
Engine 27 trained on ground ladder evolutions.
Engine 29 conducted engineer training and pumping evolutions.
9:53 a.m. – Engine 28 responded to an EMS call for breathing difficulty to Post Avenue in Oakdale. Engine 28 arrived on scene and found a patient who was unresponsive and pulseless. The crew along with Oak Valley Ambulance provided patient care and were able to regain pulses. The patient was transported to a local facility for further medical care.
SUNDAY, SEPT. 13
Battalion 2: OES 4618 assigned to the Plaskett fire was assigned to DIV. TT and worked a 12-hour operational period. Crews supporting handcrews and dozers working on containment lines.

7:51 p.m. – Engine 26, Engine 7 and Battalion 2 responded to an injury accident. Battalion 2 arrived on scene with two vehicles involved. Crews evaluated drivers in both vehicles for minor injuries. Both patients were transported for further evaluation.
Battalion 5: With a quiet day, Battalion 5 crews took the time to get caught up on station maintenance and reviewed how to draft from a static water source.
SATURDAY, SEPT. 12
Battalion 2: OES 4618 assigned to the Plaskett fire was assigned to DIV. TT and worked a 12-hour operational period. Crews supporting handcrews and dozers working on containment lines.
Captain Zurilgen is assigned to the McCully incident in Oregon.
Battalion 5: Battalion 5 personnel participated in a variety of exercises throughout the day. Topics included hose stretches, stokes basket exercise, area familiarization and firefighter down procedures.
11 a.m. – Engine 28 and BC5 responded to the 200 block of East F Street in Oakdale for a possible hazardous materials release. MFD crews contacted the reporting party, who stated there was a strong chemical smell in a cleaning supply room, but it now had dissipated. MFD personnel searched the area and found that the basement had flooded, leaving a large amount of sand and mud on the floor. The building owner confirmed that this was the smell that they had reported. Oakdale public works was called to the scene to try and find where the water had come from. MFD units and OPD units cleared the scene.
FRIDAY, SEPT. 11

Chief Bairos, Chief Bray along with E26 and Battalion 2 participated in a September 11th remembrance ceremony at Station 26.
10:01 a.m. – Engine 26, Truck 5 and Battalion 2 responded to a rescue for a reported individual with arm trapped in farming equipment. E26 arrived on scene and advised the patient was able to extricate himself. E26 canceled the balance of the response. E26 assisted with patient care. Patient was transported for further evaluation.
Battalion 5: MFD crews partook in a “Remembrance Day Ceremony” at Station 28. Chief Hunter, Mayor Bairos, OPD and members of the public gathered and remembered those who lost their lives on 9/11.
Station 27 crews continued to prepare for the up-and-coming probationary test. Items that were reviewed were how to deal with hazardous materials incidents and sprinkler systems.
5 p.m. – Engine 26, E27 and BC5 responded to a subject who was struck by a train in Riverbank. E26 arrived at scene and assisted with patient care. The patient was transported to a local hospital.
THURSDAY, SEPT. 10
Battalion 2: CA Zurilgen is deployed to the McCulley Fire in Oregon as a base camp manager.
CA Crabtree remains deployed as XST4204F Strike Team Leader to Plaskett Fire. OES 4618 remains deployed with XST4204F on the Plaskett Fire.
Battalion 5: Crews trained in their territories on firefighting strategies and tactics.
8:30 p.m. – Engine 29, Engine 28 and Battalion 5 responded to a head on collision on Highway 108 east of Landcaster Road. Crews arrived on scene to find one car fully involved in fire and a truck with major damage. The driver of the car on fire was declared deceased at the scene, while the driver of the truck had minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital. CHP is investigating.
WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 9
Battalion 2: BC Tucker is deployed to Washington State as a base camp manager.
CA Zurilgen is deployed to the McCulley Fire in Oregon as a base camp manager.
CA Crabtree remains deployed as XST4204F Strike Team Leader to Plaskett Fire. OES 4618 remains deployed with XST4204F on the Plaskett Fire.
Engine 24, DC Bairos, and BC Burke attended the first responder luncheon at the Waterford Museum.
Battalion 5: Crews trained in their territories on firefighting strategies and tactics.
Engine 28 assisted the Oakdale High School Fire Science Class with apparatus and equipment orientation.
TUESDAY, SEPT. 8
Battalion 2: Chief Tucker remains in Washington assigned to the Little Giant fire.
OES 4618 assigned to the Plaskett fire was assigned to DIV. TT and worked a 12-hour operational period. Crews supporting handcrews and dozers working on containment lines.

Retirement flag ceremony for Captain Leighton. We wish Captain Leighton a happy retirement.
Battalion 5: Crews performed company level training in their respective FMA’s.
Engine 27, Battalion 5 and Deputy Chief Nicasio attended the Oakdale City Council meeting where they were recognized for the upcoming 25th year anniversary of September 11.
Engine 29 conducted company level training focused on drafting operations and progressive hoselays.
1:50 p.m. – Engine 28, Engine 27, and Battalion 5 responded to Valley Home Road and River Road in Oakdale for a reported injury vehicle accident. Engine 28 arrived on scene to find a two-vehicle accident and checked for injuries. Crews provided patient care for one patient with minor injuries.
3:14 p.m. – Engine 26 and Battalion 5 responded to the 2700 block of Topeka Street for a reported stabbing victim. Engine 26 arrived on scene and provided ALS care to a subject that suffered multiple stab wounds. The patient was transported to a local hospital for further care.
