The following is a listing of some of the local calls for service involving the Modesto Fire Department, which staffs Stations 27, 28, 29 and 30 in Oakdale, Knights Ferry and Valley Home as part of Battalion 5; and the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Department, covering the Riverbank area, as part of Battalion 2.
Calls were logged during the time period of Tuesday, March 5 through Monday, March 11. Days not listed had no reports of significant incidents in this area.
MONDAY, MARCH 11
Battalion 2: Engine 21, Engine 24, and Engine 26 all participated in Quarterly Drivers Training at Station 17.
6:39 p.m. – Engine 26, Engine 27, Quint 22, and Battalion 5 responded to the report of a potential structure fire, smoke in the kitchen. Engine 26 arrived on scene to a single-story residence with nothing showing and operated in the investigative mode. Engine 26 found there was a cooking fire on the stove that was already extinguished. Crews checked for extension and cancelled the balance of the response.
Battalion 5: Battalion 5 companies performed Monday apparatus checks and yard maintenance.
Companies rotated through Quarterly Drivers Training at Station 17.
10:30 a.m. – Engine 28 and Battalion 5 responded to an unresponsive patient. Engine 28 arrived on scene and immediately started CPR on the patient. Oak Valley Ambulance and Engine 28 provided care for approximately 10 minutes when pulses returned. The patient was transported to a local hospital for further care.
SUNDAY, MARCH 10
Medic 1 and the five duty MST Battalion Chiefs attended a training focusing on triage and upcoming battalion drills.
Battalion 2: Apparatus and station maintenance was performed by all companies.
Training was conducted at the engine company level.
Battalion 5: Crews completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Battalion 5 distributed new Milwaukee grinder kits to Battalion 5 companies. This will allow companies to force entry into hardened locks that have become problematic for bolt cutters.
3:44 p.m. – Engine 7, Squad 11, Engine 5, Engine 6, Engine 26, Truck 5, Battalion’s 1 and 3, Medic 1 and FIU were dispatched to the 3900 block of Coffee Road for a working structure fire. Engine 7 arrived with a double wide mobile home with light smoke showing. After investigating, offensive mode was declared. Crews extinguished the fire and opened the wall to overhaul the origin. One occupant was displaced. FIU investigating.
SATURDAY, MARCH 9
Battalion 2: All companies performed apparatus and station maintenance.
Training was conducted at the engine company level, Q22 trained on ladder and roof operations.
Battalion 5: Crews completed daily apparatus and equipment checks.
Battalion 5 assisted with handling resources during a working fire in the morning. 11:13 a.m. – Boat 28 assisted other MST resources on a water rescue call at McHenry and River; the call was unfounded.
9:17 p.m. – Engine 27, Engine 28, Quint 22, and Battalion 5 to West F Street for a natural gas leak inside the building. Crews arrived on scene to find a light smell of natural gas next to a fireplace. Firefighters secured the gas and remained on scene for PG&E. Residents were sheltered in place during the incident.
FRIDAY, MARCH 8
Battalion 2: 11:49 a.m. – Engine 9 and Quint 22 were dispatched to a vehicle accident with entrapment at Claus Road and Creekwood Drive. Before E9 arrived on scene, bystanders pushed the vehicle back on to its wheels. There was one person with minor injuries; the balance was canceled.
7:10 p.m. – Quint 22 responded to a vehicle fire in the area of Yosemite Boulevard and Wellsford Road. This was the result of a hit-and-run accident. Both rear wheels of the trailer were on fire when the truck stopped. CHP is investigating the accident.
Battalion 5: 10:29 a.m. – Modesto Engine 28 responded to a natural gas leak outside in the 1300 block of East J Street in Oakdale. Engine 28 arrived on scene where a construction crew that was digging hit the gas line and caused an active leak. PG&E responded to the scene and mitigated the leak.
10:37 a.m. – Modesto Engine 27 was dispatched to a mattress on fire in the roadway in the 1400 block of East D Street in Oakdale. Upon arrival there was a burned mattress on the side of the road with light smoke coming from a single-story house. Engine 27 upgraded the call to a potential structure fire which dispatched Engine 29, Quint 22, and BC5. Engine 27 was able to confirm that there was negative fire inside the residence and that the mattress was extinguished so the responding balance was cancelled.
THURSDAY, MARCH 7
Battalion 5: Crews completed apparatus and equipment checks.
The roofing contractor conducted a pre-construction walk through at Station 28 in preparation for replacing the roof.
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 6
Battalion 2: Engine 26 conducted company level training with a new firefighter.
Battalion 5: Engine 27 cleaned all equipment and compartments on Grass 27 after extended maintenance was completed.
Engines 27 and 28 performed multi company drills.
Engine 29’s crew installed new lights on Boat 29.
TUESDAY, MARCH 5
Battalion 2: Engine 26 conducted company level training.
Battalion 5: Battalion 5 attended the Department staff meeting in Modesto.
Engine 28 continued to provide an overview of operations and station expectations to new firefighters.
Station 27 provided training to new firefighters on staffing and administrative dues at the station.
