Modesto gas prices have fallen 1.5 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $4.18/gallon on July 26, according to GasBuddy’s daily survey of 201 stations in Modesto. Gas prices in Modesto, however, are still 7.7 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand $1.24/gallon higher than a year ago.

According to GasBuddy price reports, the cheapest station in Modesto was priced at $3.75/gallon on Monday, July 26 while the most expensive was $4.59, a difference of 84.0 cents per gallon. The lowest price in the state was $3.59 while the highest was $6.29, a difference of $2.70/gallon.

The national average price of gasoline has fallen 2.9 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.14/gallon. The national average is up 4.7 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands 97.2 cents per gallon higher than a year ago.

Neighboring areas and their current gas prices include: Stockton - $4.13/gallon, down 3.6 cents per gallon from last week’s $4.17; Oakland - $4.36, down 1.2 cents from $4.37; and San Jose - $4.36, down 1.5 cents per gallon from last week’s $4.38/gallon.

“With oil prices struggling under the weight of a rise in new COVID cases thanks to the Delta variant and OPEC’s increase in oil production, average gas prices in most states finally drifted lower,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy. “However, we aren’t yet in the clear - U.S. gasoline demand last week surged to a new 2021 high, besting the week prior to the July 4 holiday. This shows that motorists aren’t slowing their appetite for hitting the road just yet, and that could further boost prices should demand remain hot. For now, motorists should enjoy the perhaps brief respite at the pump and buckle up for what might be a bumpy finish to summer.”

Historical gasoline prices in Modesto and the national average going back 10 years show a high average price of $3.89 per gallon in Modesto in 2014 and a low of $2.55 in 2016. Nationally, the highest average price recorded on July 26 was $3.69 in 2011 and the U.S. average low was $2.14 in 2016.
