Emma Morales, Orange Blossom 4-H Reporter says the poppies the club planted along the North Canyon trail above the Covered Bridge are popping up. Also, the club members met at the Odd Fellows Hall to clean up the inside and outside of the building (the club meets there). The members weeded around the building and community garden and pruned plants and trees. Two truckloads of brush were disposed of as well as one truckload of garbage.

Welcome to the world Huxley William Higgens, born March 11 to Will and Danitra. He weighed in at 7 pounds 9 ounces and was 20 inches long. Proud Knights Ferry Grandparents are Bill and Gayle Higgens.

At the meeting Monday night on the side channels proposed in the Knights Ferry area, Ramon Martin and J.D. Wikert from Fish and Wildlife passed out pictures of the Lancaster Road restoration project. Jim and Teri Curtis talked on that project as it was in their “back yard.” The two areas that are good for side channel development were shown to the audience, one below Russian Rapids and one in the floodplain at the Army Corp Park. There was a lot of discussion on the area below Russian Rapids so they took that one out of consideration. No one objected to the area in the park. This project only takes about two weeks to do but the permitting etc. takes a long time so it might be two years in the future.

The Knights Ferry History and Museum Associates met and discussed the upcoming Peddler’s Faire. There are 44 dealers signed up so far for the April 29th event. At the Civil War reenactment, the Knights Ferry School 8th graders will be selling hot dogs and sodas in conjunction with Miller’s Hall.

The Knights Ferry Elementary School Parent Teacher Club put on another very successful Silent/Live Auction and Dinner on Saturday. Spearheaded by chairperson Shelli Borba and committee members Michelle Burke, Dara Patton, Kim Banks, Amarie Elting, Corrine Anderson, Sarah Sundberg, Jolene O’Neil, Michelle Sturtevant, Tasha Sweet, Megan Peterson, Aimee Crawford and Helene Nilsson, the evening was fun and profitable! The Borba family cooked the delicious meal and the community service group from Kohl’s Department Store (Kohl’s Care) served. There were many raffle items and silent auction items. The live auction, with auctioneer Will Cockrell was fast paced. The Kindergarten project, a receipt book / photo book went for $500. The First Grade project, rustic wine barrel planter with handprints and names burned into it, went for $300. The Second Grade project was an 8-foot picnic table with two benches that the children measured, clamped, drilled, bolted and put their names on. A photo album of their work was included. It went for $750. The Third Graders had two projects, one a wrought iron table with barn wood top that went for $275, and wine barrels made into two tables with 100 year old barn wood donated by the Rancheria Del Rio Estanislaus. Included were coasters decorated by the students. The Fourth Grade also had two projects; one a 100-year-old farm gate donated by the Brunker family that they turned into a coat rack that went for $200 and a reclaimed and refurbished three-piece garden set that went for $500. The Fifth Grade projects were a hand painted flag on barn wood that went for $900 and a coffee table of reclaimed barn wood with a coffee table book on Knights Ferry created by the Fifth Graders that went for $400. The Sixth Grade project was an outdoor fire pit made by Jeremy Page and decorated by the students and it went for $1400. The Seventh Grade project was a photo of the Covered Bridge with a wood frame with the student’s names on it. It went for $900. The Eighth Grade Project was an outdoor table with their names wood burned into it and the KFS mascot, the bobcat, in the middle. It went for $375. It was a very fun evening!
