COVID Forces A Few OHS Sports To Shut Down

Just three weeks into the school year, Oakdale High School has suffered COVID’s wrath. It was announced Wednesday morning that Oakdale High School’s volleyball series against Sonora was canceled; then shortly after, word was received that Friday night’s football home game against Edison has also been canceled.

Oakdale High School’s athletic director, Dave Bacigalupi confirmed the report and stated that those games are indeed canceled due to COVID and safety protocol. Bacigalupi also noted that this does not mean that there are positive tests of COVID but it is a safety protocol.

As of right now, Thursday night’s freshman football game and other sports are still on as scheduled but are subject to change.

Varsity football coach Trent Merzon was frustrated and disappointed in the decision.

“Beyond frustrated at the whole situation. Seems like everyday things change,” Coach Merzon said.

Oakdale High School Principal Mike Moore also commented on the situation.

“I just got out of a meeting with Mr. Bacigalupi and as of right now that’s where we stand. Both volleyball and football (junior varsity and varsity) are canceled. We have certain guidelines that we have to go by and that’s what we are doing,” Principal Moore explained.
