California Leading Nation In Zero-Emission Vehicle Exports

The Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz) this past week announced that in 2020, zero-emission vehicles became the single largest export from the largest economic engine in the Unites States: California.

“When it comes to addressing climate change, California has been leading for decades, and clean cars and trucks are just the latest example,” said Governor Gavin Newsom. “Now with more than 500,000 advanced-energy jobs, including those focused on manufacturing zero-emission cars, buses and trucks, California is proof positive that cutting edge policies are also good for the economy.”

Building on California’s historic commitment requiring sales of all new passenger vehicles to be zero-emission by 2035, Governor Newsom’s 2021-22 Proposed State Budget includes a $1.5 billion investment to achieve the state’s zero-emission vehicle goals, including securitizing up to $1 billion to accelerate the pace and scale of the infrastructure needed to support zero-emission vehicles. The Budget proposal will leverage additional private sector capital to build the necessary infrastructure while also creating jobs that will in turn support California’s recovery.

“California has proven that we can grow our economy and protect the environment through active, sustained collaboration between government, communities and industry,” said Dee Dee Myers, Director of GO-Biz. “The investment proposed by Governor Newson will help the market scale, serve as a core foundation for a sustainable economic recovery, and ensure that California continues to do what we always have in this space: lead.”

Earlier this month, GO-Biz announced the publication of the Zero-Emission Vehicle Market Development Strategy (ZEV Strategy). Developed in partnership with the California Air Resources Board, Energy Commission, Public Utilities Commission, State Transportation Agency, Department of Finance and other key State agencies, local agencies and private sector stakeholders, the ZEV Strategy is meant to help accelerate the ZEV market to deliver the climate and air quality benefits of zero-emissions to all Californians.
