In a home game to start off the week, the varsity Oakdale Mustangs baseball team welcomed Manteca to town on Monday, March 30.

The Valley Oak League contest went Oakdale’s way, as they roughed up the Buffaloes by a 13-2 final.

A five-run bottom of the third was key for Oakdale, which had 13 runs on 12 hits, committing just one error. Manteca had two runs on three hits with four errors.

Landon Schutte got the win on the mound, striking out seven in his five innings of work.

Offensively, there were a couple of big power hitters for Oakdale against Manteca. Griffin Costa went 3-for-4 with a home run, a triple, four RBI and three runs scored. Peyton Wallace also went 3-for-4 on the day, notching a home run, four RBI and a run scored.

BOYS GOLF

The golf team is off to a great start this season, said head coach Jeremy Fields.

Playing so far in two league tournaments (18 holes), the Mustangs have won both of them. The most recent Valley Oak League tournament was at Creekside golf course in Modesto.

“Oakdale’s team score was 381 beating second place Central Catholic (451) by 70 strokes,” Fields said.

East Union finished third at 452, Sierra was fourth at 453.

“Oakdale was led by three players who all shot 74: Estuardo Duque, Fred Herschbach, Julian Velazquez,” explained Fields. “Brody Boysen carded a 75, and Easton Thalman 84 to round out the scoring for Oakdale.”

Oakdale competed in a non-league invitational tourney called the “Crosstown Cup” at Turlock Country Club on March 23.

“This event was a team combined three-man scramble event. Oakdale captured first place with a team score that totaled 11 under par,” Fields said.

Victorious team members, included Duque, Herschbach, and Boysen (9 under) and Thalman, Velazquez, and Nik Nlader (2 under).

The team was scheduled to host the Oakdale 100 on March 30, with 24 teams anticipated; look for results of that competition in the April 8 edition.
