Strong Performance At Riddle For Wrestlers

The annual James Riddle Classic welcomed hundreds of wrestlers to town on Saturday, Dec. 14. Oakdale hosts the annual event each year where nearly 50 high schools compete. For the Mustangs it was a very successful day as they took first place as a team with 206.50 points. Second place honors went to Lincoln, which finished with 138.50 points. As individuals, a group of Mustangs captured first place honors in their respective brackets.

At 113 pounds, it was a pair of Oakdale wrestlers in the finals. Michael Torres took on Alan Casey in the finals and both were named co-champs. Torres reached the finals after defeating Devin Aguilar, Jonathan Nguyen and Isaiah Rubio. Casey defeated Nic Genasci, Bob Cuevas and Yousuf Zigan.

Brayden Abell earned the championship at 120 pounds with wins over Silverio Gidina, Colton Munnikas and Arti Feizi. In the finals Abell defeated Carter Bailey.

Jonathan Hernandez was named champion at 126 pounds. Hernandez battled his way through Matthew Montavio, Ty Ferrante, Zavion Fernandes and Dylan Marlow to capture the championship.

At 152 pounds Ceasar Garza earned a gold medal with his victory over Rylan Matheson in the finals. To reach the finals Garza knocked off Hunter Ward, Rudy Zepeda and Angelo Acia.

Other notable performance included Spencer Von Savoye, who reached the semi-finals at 132 pounds and Jordan Van Rys, who reached the quarterfinals at 170 pounds.

This weekend the boys head to Sin City for the Las Vegas Holiday Classic.
