Oakdale Wrestlers Take Second At Cossarek Classic

Over this past weekend, several members of the Oakdale Wrestling team participated in The Cossarek Classic. The two-day tournament featured 36 teams from throughout the state. The Mustangs finished second with a total of 237.5 team points only behind the first place St. John Bosco (374.5). Rounding out the top five were Fountain Valley (232.5), Calvary Chapel (206.5) and Birmingham (177.5).

The Mustangs had 11 competitors in the tournament and saw two grapplers come home as tourney champions.

The 175-pound champion Carlos Garcia defeated Max McWilliams 7-4 via decision in the finals. He took out Gabe Villaruel, Rocky Windrath, Ryan Lowry and Matin Ghanavant to reach the finals. Wes Burford was the 190-pound champion. Burford defeated teammate Mathew Cooley in the finals via fall at 1:44 of first period to claim the championship.

Taking second place in the 215-pound weight class was Elias Corona as he fell to Ryland Whitworth via decision 5-0. In the 285-pound weight class, Oakdale’s Emilio Johnson took second place and Gavin Gleason placed third. Eziequel Vela placed second in the 126-pound weight class. Others that finished were Taylen Beck 120 pounds (third place); Izaias Espino 106 pounds (seventh place) and Cody Soares finished seventh in the 150-pound weight class.

This Saturday, Oakdale will host the 2023 James Riddle Tournament, with competition beginning at 9 a.m.
