As the winter sports season has officially closed for Oakdale High School athletes, the spring teams are taking over and settling in to their schedule of contests.

In the early going, volleyball, baseball and softball have been busy, putting several matches in the books already.

The varsity volleyball boys have gotten off to a strong start. The slate of preseason games so far has seen four wins for the squad and just one loss.

They swept to 3-0 straight set wins at home against Grace Davis and Riverbank, along with traveling to Pacheco for a road victory. They also got past Escalon in a home match, 3-1, and their lone loss so far was on the home court, against Lodi, where they were swept by the Flames.

Five non-league games and one Valley Oak League contest have kept the varsity baseball team busy. They opened up with a 2-0 win at home against Los Banos on Feb. 23 but fell in a game against Spanish Springs at home, 7-1. They quickly got back on track, the Mustang baseball boys defeating Merced at home, 11-2, as well as edging out Enochs, 5-4. They put together an 11-6 win over Turlock before going on the road to face off with Patterson in VOL play on March 2, winning that game by a 12-6 final.

It has been a bit of a rocky opening for the softball girls, as the varsity squad so far has one win and two losses. They fell at Tracy by a 7-3 final on Feb. 24 but then got a home win against Gregori, the offense exploding for a 13-3 victory. They lost at Atwater on March 2 by a 6-2 final.
