On the first of September, the hottest day of the nascent school year, the Oakdale Mustang varsity boys’ cross country team was lava hot as well sweeping the top three places and four out of the top six places in storming to first place in the Jaguar Invitational Cross Country Meet held at Eagal Lakes in Tracy. The defending Valley Oak League and Sac-Joaquin Section champions dominated the 12-team meet with senior Dax Daley earning first place with a run of 10 minutes, 33 seconds over the two-mile course. Fellow senior Caleb Cavanaugh earned second place out of the 83-runners in the race with a time of 10 minutes, 34 seconds and junior Jackson Oliveira earned third just a hair behind Cavanaugh (recording the same time). Cavanaugh’s younger brother, sophomore Jacob Cavanaugh, achieved a sixth place finish in the event.

In the varsity girls’ division, the Mustangs earned a second-place finish with sophomore Audry Scott finishing sixth out of the 66 runners overall, covering the two miles in 14:00 minutes. Sophomore Ava Calandro (14:20) finished 14th and senior Anna Nalder (14:57) finished 19th. The frosh-soph boys earned a fourth place team finish with two freshmen, Parker Whitemeyer and Dirk Scott, finishing 11th (12:23) and 12th (12:29) respectively. Sophomore Landon Arnold earned an 18th place finish out of the 64 runners in the race in 13:02.

Head coach Guy Fowler was buoyed by the results of the meet. “We ran well for the first meet of the season. We now know where we are in our training and we need to improve on some things. We had a couple runners sit out today due to some minor injuries and are looking to get to full strength soon.”

The Mustangs will travel to Folsom on Saturday, Sept. 10, to compete in the Josh Ruff Invitational Meet.
