Losses On Hardwood For Varsity Basketball Girls

Two games resulted in two losses for the Oakdale High School varsity girls basketball team. In action on the hardwood this past week Oakdale (14-8, 2-5) lost to Kimball (19-4, 7-0) and East Union (19-4, 6-1) in a pair of road Valley Oak League games.

On Tuesday, Jan. 21 the girls went to Tracy to face the Jaguars where the home team made short work of the visitors 66-39. This would snap Oakdale’s four game winning streak. Kimball and East Union are currently in first and second place in the Valley Oak League, respectively.

In the loss, Maddy Jones led Oakdale in scoring with eight points. She also pulled down 13 rebounds and had a block in the loss. Oakdale had seven players score in the contest. Tayler Lamb had seven points, Afton Daley had six and three others had five points. Two days later the girls dropped a 69-36 loss to the Lancers in Manteca. The Lady Lancers leaped out to a big lead and did not let up. East Union led 34-15 at the half and posted 27 points in the third quarter to pull away 61-26. Oakdale did outscore the home team 10-8 in the final frame.

“That was a rough game, really a rough week,” said Oakdale head coach Julie Ford. “Those were the top two teams in our league. We hope to learn from it and finish the regular season strong.”

With the losses, Oakdale fell to fifth place in the Valley Oak League. On Tuesday, Jan. 28 the girls hosted Manteca (15-6, 5-2) following The Leader’s press time. Oakdale hits the road on Thursday night when they travel to Stockton to face Weston Ranch (11-9, 2-4). Oakdale defeated the Cougars by 10 points on Jan. 16.

 

JV, FRESHMEN

For the junior varsity girls Oakdale defeated Kimball 34-32 in a thriller. Oakdale fell behind early and trailed by seven entering the fourth quarter. The girls outscored the Jaguars 15-6 in the final frame. Savannah Borba had nine points, including seven in the fourth quarter. Borba hit a deep three and hit a clutch free throw with less than 10 seconds remaining in the game. Jennifer Castro also had nine points and Kassidy Fmura had a huge game defensively with 21 rebounds. The ladies finished the week with a 38-23 win over East Union. Borba had 11 points, Fmura had nine points and 13 rebounds. Alivia Antinetti had seven points in the win.

The freshman girls split their road games this week. Oakdale fell to Kimball 38-19. Kennedy Jones had a team high five points. Addison Szuggar and Leah Arrighi each had four. Against East Union the team’s offense woke up and pulled off a 35-33 win over the Lancers. Jones had 12 points. Hayden Morton had seven and Riely Jones added five.

“It was a great team effort with scoring coming from seven different players,” said head coach Justin Martin.
