Basketball girls secure win in season finale

The recent Senior Night for Oakdale’s basketball girls was a success. With four seniors being acknowledged before tipoff on Feb. 6, Oakdale defeated Central Catholic in the game. 29-26. The four seniors were Brooke Wheat, Grace Miller, Alyssa Ferguson-Rice and Savannah McBroom. All four seniors scored in the win. Wheat had four points, Miller had six, Ferguson-Rice added two points and McBroom posted two points as well.

Central Catholic’s scoring drought came to an end when they scored their first field goal of the night at 4:46 to tie the game at two in the first quarter. Oakdale’s Miller scored on a fast break layup following a steal to give Oakdale a 6-2 advantage with 3:11 left in the first quarter. Oakdale began to pull away in the second quarter. Natalie Powell pulled down multiple offensive rebounds and successfully made a basket underneath and on the next possession Wheat came up with a steal and fast break layup to give Oakdale a 16-9 lead with 4:43 left in the half. Oakdale led 18-11 at halftime.

Powell scored on an offensive rebound and putback with 1:01 left in the third to go up 24-15 and the host team entered the fourth quarter with a 26-15 lead. The Raiders went on a 9-2 run to pull within a 28-26 deficit with 53.9 left. Avery Gleason split a pair of free throws with 40.9 remaining giving Oakdale a 29-26 lead. The game came to an end when Wheat knocked the ball out of bounds off a Central Catholic player with less than a second to play.

Oakdale finished the season with a 9-17 overall record and went 3-7 in Valley Oak League play.
