Sherman Mead Porter, 73, died Tuesday, March 2 at Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas, NV surrounded by his family.

He was born in Fernwood, OH. He lived in Riverbank for many years and worked for JM Equipment in Modesto. He served as a Riverbank councilman from 1982-1990. He then moved to Oakdale and was the airport manager for several years before moving to Fort Mohave, AZ.

Mr. Porter was a Vietnam veteran and served 20 years in the Air Force. While serving in Vietnam, he received two DFCs and 19 air medals.

He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Porter; son, Steven (Jeannie) Porter; daughter, Cindy (Doug) Brink; brother, Daniel Porter; stepchildren, Steven (Kendall) Murphy, Peter (Krissy) Murphy, and Anita (Don) Beddell; grandchildren, Garrett Heapy, Ashley Heapy, and Samantha Porter; 9 step-grandchildren; one great-grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews in Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elwanda Porter; sister, Mae Fagundez and parents, Otto Porter and Edna Snyder.

Visitation was held March 9 at Lakewood Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 10 at Lakewood Memorial Park. A gathering for family and friends will follow the service at the Riverbank Assembly of God Church.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made in his memory to Breast Cancer Research or Hospice.
