Robert ‘Nick’ Nicholas, 68, died Tuesday, April 26 at his Sonora home after valiantly fighting cancer for almost 15 years.
He was born in San Jose, the only son of longtime San Jose Mercury News Advertising employees Rose Aceves Nicholas of Santa Clara and Frank Nicoletti of Mt. View, who met and worked at the Mercury News in the 1930s and 1940s.
Mr. Nicholas moved to Sonora when he left Memorex Corporation. He was a longtime Sonora resident.
He joined the U.S. Marines Reserves and served with them for 20 years. He fought in Viet Nam in the special forces unit in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
He worked locally with George Reed Construction, Angeo’s, and retired while working with John Cornish Paving of Riverbank and Oakdale.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon of Sonora; children, Robert ‘Bob’ Nicholas of Modesto, Christine ‘Chris’ (Alec) Weckerly of Escalon, Matt (Nancy) Nicolleti of San Diego, Shelley Sanders of Jamestown, and Erin (Tom) Nichols of Yosemite; mother-in-law, Margaret Blackburne of Sonora; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 1p.m. on Thursday, May 5 at Terzich and Wilson Funeral Home, Sonora.
