Michael Don Pettinger, 85, of Oakdale, California, passed away peacefully on November 4, 2025, after a courageous battle with kidney disease and dementia. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Michael will forever be remembered for his honesty, integrity, steadfast work ethic, and love for life’s simple pleasures.

Born on April 1, 1940, in Blue Earth, Minnesota, Michael was the son of Donald and Audrey Pettinger. After graduating Oakdale High School, he proudly served his country in the military from May 1958 to May 1966. Upon returning home, Michael earned his Associates degree and went on to build a long and respected career with the City of Oakdale, where he dedicated 42 years and concluded his service as Public Works Director.

Michael shared 36 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Leslie Pettinger. Together, they enjoyed exploring the country in their RV, spending months traveling across the United States, and finding new adventures along the way. One of his fondest memories was a cruise to Tahiti. Mike’s other great joys included live theater, sports – both watching and participating – and time spent with his cats, Maverick, Minka, and Lilly. An avid community member, he was a longtime member of the Modesto Elks and often supported his wife’s volunteer work with Oak Valley Community Hospital and the American Coach Chapter of the FMCA.

He is survived by his wife, Leslie; daughter, Sandi Brown Rugh; stepson, Eric Dean; brother, Peter Pettinger; and grandchildren Christian Brown, Zach Brown and Briana Bridge; and Connor, Keanu, and River Dean. Also his great granddaughter Phoenix Bridge. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Dee Ann, and his son Daniel.

A memorial service to celebrate Michael’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on November 22, 2025, at Escalon Presbyterian Church, 1612 First Street, Escalon, California. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pettinger Memorial Fund for Seniors with Felines at Escalon Small Animal Clinic, 1050 Escalon Avenue, Escalon, CA, 95320.
