Fidel Julian ‘Fid’ Munoz, 82, died Wednesday, June 24.
He was born in Merced Falls on Jan. 31, 1927 to Carmen and Fidel Blanco Munoz.
He graduated from Oakdale High School, Class of 1945. He joined the Coast Guard his senior year and received his diploma by mail aboard the S.S. Freeman on a troop transport ship in the South Pacific.
After the service and various jobs, he went to work at the Oakdale Poultry Company, where he met and married the boss’s daughter, Lola Petroni. The wedding took place at the old St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oakdale on June 27, 1948.
Mr. Munoz helped run the plant and enjoyed all the people who worked with him, especially his father-in-law Pete Petroni, who he described as the ‘salt of the earth.’
At age 54, he decided it was time to ‘hang it up’ and go fishing. Together with his wife, they rented a home by the ocean in San Carlos and spent many winter months enjoying his favorite sport.
He was a charter member of the Oakdale Golf and Country Club. He and his wife enjoyed traveling through Italy, Spain, Canada, and the United States, but one of his favorite things was riding his old “48” Fergie Tractor on his field. To the very end he said what he always said, “Loli, we’ve had a great ride.”
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lola; brother, Vincent; and grandson, Earand Stanshaw.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Julie Ann Stanshaw; parents, Fidel and Carmen Munoz; sister, Madeline Carlson; brothers, Martin and Julian Munoz.
A funeral mass was held on June 30 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, burial followed at St. Stanislaus Catholic Cemetery, Modesto.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to Oak Valley Hospital Foundation, 350 So. Oak Ave., Oakdale, CA 95361; or to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 1225 Olive St., Oakdale, CA 95361.
