Elias “Leo” Joseph Carrillo, age 75, passed away in his Oakdale home under Hospice care and the care of his loving wife and children on December 20, 2019. Leo was born on May 7, 1944, in Modesto, to Abraham and Josephine Carrillo. Leo was a 1962 graduate of Oakdale High School. He married Claudora Carlile in 1964.
Leo worked for the California Department of Corrections at Deuel Vocational Institution for 23 years where he retired as a Correctional Officer. Prior to that he worked for the Riverbank Ammunition plant, the Riverbank and Gustine Police Departments, and Pickering Lumber Mill in Tuolumne County. Leo was a parishioner of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Oakdale where he was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He also served as a Past President, Past Grand President, District Deputy, and a State Officer for the Knights.
One of Leo’s passions was mentoring the youth of his community through sports. He was one of the Oakdale Youth Baseball Association’s founding members. In addition to coaching Oakdale Youth Baseball for several years, he coached Babe Ruth baseball in Gustine, Oakdale American Legion and was a player/coach in the Mexican American Baseball League. Leo also coached three of his granddaughters’ softball teams. In addition to coaching youth baseball, Leo coached and was the President of the Tri City Outlaws Football team of Oakdale during the early ‘80’s.
Leo also believed in supporting his community through volunteerism. Between 1983 - 1987 he was active with the Oakdale High School Sports Boosters where he served as a booster club board member as well as President and was the Chairman for the Oakdale High School 100th Year Anniversary. For his involvement with the community, Leo was inducted into the Oakdale High School Alumni Hall of Fame. Leo was also a volunteer with the Oakdale Museum as a Historical Docent.
Leo is survived by his wife, Claudora, of 55 years, their two children, Kristine Helms (Ron Helms) and Joseph “Randal” Carrillo (Jannelle Carrillo), seven grandchildren (Kayla Lawson, Nicole Morales, Leticia Lacey, Vincent Helms, Marissa Carrillo, Erik Helms and Elias Carrillo), eight great grandchildren, a sister (Ramona Ferraz), a nephew and two nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and younger brother, Michael Carrillo.
Family and friends are invited to a visitation at the Oakdale Memoria Chapel, 830 W. “F” St., Oakdale, on January 9, 2020 from 3 p.m. – 6 p.m. and rosary from 6 p.m. – 7 p.m. Mass will begin at Saint Mary’s Church, 89 N. Oak Avenue, Oakdale, on January 10, 2020, at 10 a.m. Procession and burial immediately to follow at Oakdale Citizen’s Cemetery, 701 E. “J” St., Oakdale. Reception to commence at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church CCD hall following the burial.
