Donald E. Butterfield, a lifelong resident of Oakdale, California, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2026, at the age of 83. Don was born on October 25, 1942, in Berkeley, California, to Walter and Christina Butterfield. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Oakdale, where Don would spend the rest of his life and become a well-known and respected member of the community.
From a very young age, Don learned the art of watchmaking and repair from his father. What began as a childhood lesson became a lifelong passion and career. For 64 years he practiced his craft, eventually owning and operating Butterfield Jewelers in downtown Oakdale. Don worked right up until the time of his passing, dedicating his life to the precise and patient work he loved. His shop on the corner of East F Street and North Third Avenue became a familiar and welcoming place in town. Don was a fixture in downtown Oakdale, known not only for his skill but also for his kindness and friendly conversations. Many people knew him from his daily walks through town, where he would stop to say hello and visit with friends and neighbors.
Outside of work, Don enjoyed many interests and connections in the community. He was a member of the Oakdale Lions Club and the Oakdale Sportsman Club. He also enjoyed amateur radio and spent many hours talking with fellow operators on his HAM radio under the call sign WA6QWY.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Beverly Butterfield and many family and friends. A graveside service will be held Friday, March 13, at 10 a.m. at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Oakdale. A Celebration of Life honoring Don will follow from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Reata on 3rd in Oakdale. Friends and community members are warmly invited to attend and share memories of Don. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Oakdale Museum in Don’s memory.
