A pedestrian walking along the highway between Oakdale and Riverbank early morning on Wednesday, Jan. 14, died of injuries sustained when he walked into the path of an oncoming pickup truck.
According to a report from the California Highway Patrol, the incident occurred about 3:25 a.m.
The CHP received a call of a traffic crash on Highway 108, east of Langworth Road. Emergency personnel arrived on scene and located an unresponsive male adult lying in the roadway, with a Ford pickup nearby. The pedestrian, a 29-year-old from Oakdale, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Ford, a 67-year-old male from Modesto, was uninjured.
Officials with the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office had not yet released the identity of the victim as of mid-afternoon Wednesday, pending notification of next of kin.
The preliminary investigation indicates the pickup truck driver was traveling eastbound on Highway 108, east of Langworth Road. The male pedestrian, who was in the middle of the highway, proceeded in a southerly direction directly in front of the vehicle and the pickup struck the pedestrian.
Authorities said the driver was not under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs at the time of the crash. It is unknown at this time if the pedestrian was under the influence.
