Hello all; I hope you are well and cherishing some special holiday moments.

This week, our Valley Home column focuses on an amazing Oakdale High School athlete and young man, Wes Burford. We asked him to provide us with his thoughts as he prepares for the final few months of his senior year.
In his own words:
High School has been some of the greatest years of my life. The thought of its conclusion rarely crossed my mind until just a few months ago, making it hard to believe that it is almost over. As I entered high school, I was excited. I aimed to excel in all my sports and win a section title in each. While I did not achieve that goal in football, I learned that sometimes we do not attain everything we strive for. The feeling of that loss will stay, but it serves as motivation to push myself further.
Despite not winning a section title, I still had a very successful career. I achieved All-State in football for two years and was voted MVP by my team for two years. More importantly, I gained the kind of life lessons, relationships, and community support that matter far more than wins on a scoreboard.
In wrestling, I have placed twice at the state tournament and won numerous other tournaments.
In track, I qualified for the master’s meet twice, and my goal is to make it to state this year for track.
My achievements are not limited to sports; I also excel in the classroom. Every teacher I had was amazing, teaching me lessons that will stick with me long after I graduate. I prioritized my academics because, as a student-athlete, I know that my classes come first; poor grades are not acceptable. This focus was beneficial, leading to numerous opportunities, including a chance to attend many colleges.
I always aim high, having faith that if I reach for the stars, I will still land somewhere significant. I received a call to play football at the Air Force Academy during my junior year, and a month later, I committed to the program. This opportunity feels like a dream come true, something I had worked my entire life for, and it was right in front of me. Not only will I continue to play football for another four years, but I also have the honor of serving and defending my country.
I plan on pursuing a career as a pilot in the Air Force. Although I have yet to decide on my major, my goal is clear: I want to fly. My time in Oakdale has shaped me into the person who can achieve that dream. I know that my journey in the Air Force will be challenging—I will undoubtedly wake up some mornings questioning my decision—but I will embrace every experience. As my defensive line coach, Kevin Weber, always said, “Embrace the suck.” This statement has become a guiding principle for me; instead of feeling sorry for myself, I accept challenges head-on and strive to come out on top.
I am determined to excel in everything I do, and that commitment will guide me in the next chapter of my life. I want to express my gratitude to the Oakdale community for their unwavering support throughout my journey. I hope to honor them through the commitment and service I carry into my future. Thank you, Oakdale.
