Earlier this month, the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office investigated a reported assault that occurred in the 3000 block of Snowbird Court, Copperopolis. During the investigation, the suspect was identified as Kenneth Donald Carnes, 43, from Oakdale. Carnes reportedly assaulted the victim including holding a knife to the victim’s throat during the incident.

At about 3:30 p.m. on the day of the incident, deputies arrived at the victim’s residence to conduct a safety sweep in order to ensure the suspect was no longer there.

While approaching the residence, deputies observed Carnes walking out of the victim’s garage. Deputies gave verbal commands for Carnes to surrender; however, he ran back into the residence, shutting the main garage door. Additional deputies were requested to the scene and eventually cleared the interior of the victim’s residence.

A neighbor near the victim’s house arrived and advised their residence was left unsecured when they left in the morning. The neighbor asked deputies to clear their residence to check for Carnes. While clearing the neighbor’s residence, deputies located Carnes hiding in a closet. He was taken into custody without further incident. While taking Carnes in to custody, he was found to possess approximately 50 ounces of methamphetamine and five knives.

Carnes was transported to the Calaveras County jail and booked on the following charges: two counts of residential burglary (felony), false imprisonment with violence (felony), assault with a deadly weapon (felony), domestic violence (felony), transport illegal drugs (felony), possession of drugs for sale (felony), stalking (felony), destroy cellular phone (misdemeanor), resist or delay peace officer (misdemeanor) and tamper with fire alarm (misdemeanor). In addition to the local charges, Carnes also had a felony warrant issued from the Superior Court of Stanislaus County for revocation of supervision (felony); Calaveras County for resisting or delaying arrest.

Carnes was being held without bail.

The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind people to secure their residences when they leave.
