In action at their Monday night meeting, members of the Oakdale City Council unanimously approved a resolution to accept $63,000 in grant funding from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) for the city’s Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP).

The grant, intended to improve roadway safety, will be administered by the Oakdale Police Department. Funding will support targeted enforcement efforts in areas known for high rates of traffic violations or collisions.

“This grant allows us to continue enforcement and educational campaigns that reduce traffic-related injuries and fatalities,” Interim Police Chief Joseph Grogan stated in the staff report.

The STEP grant will fund overtime for officers, public education materials, and equipment used to enforce laws related to speeding, distracted driving, impaired driving, and pedestrian safety.

The Council voted 5-0 in favor of the resolution during its July 21 regular meeting.

Officials noted that the program is part of a broader statewide effort by the OTS to fund local initiatives aimed at enhancing traffic safety and reducing roadway fatalities.

The Oakdale Police Department will report enforcement outcomes and educational outreach metrics to the state as part of the grant compliance requirements.

The program is scheduled to run through the 2025-2026 fiscal year.
