Society for disABILITIES secures site with property purchase
Society

This holiday season, Society for disABILITIES is celebrating a major milestone: the purchase of the property at the southwest corner of 8th and L streets in Modesto, which the organization has rented for many years. The acquisition marks a new chapter of stability and growth for the nonprofit, ensuring its ability to serve the community for generations to come.

The property includes three buildings:

The current office and thrift store, a familiar hub for volunteers, donors and shoppers;

A vacant building soon to become the new Medical Equipment Loan Closet storage and distribution center;

A third building that is rented, providing income to support long-term sustainability.

With this purchase, Society for disABILITIES now has a permanent home — a critical step for any nonprofit. The vacant building will allow the organization to move its 3,000 pieces of medical equipment out of attic storage, making them more accessible to staff and more visible to clients. This improved space will also support expansion of the inventory, enabling the Society to serve even more individuals in need.

“The acquisition of this property is a transformative moment for our organization,” said Executive Director Cathy Mendoza. “It not only provides stability but also opens the door to greater efficiency, visibility, and growth in our services.”

The Board and staff are excited to begin transforming the new space, with full use anticipated by early 2026. The rented building on the property will provide a steady revenue stream, helping the Society work toward mortgage-free ownership — a goal that will secure the organization’s future for decades to come.

For more than 75 years, Society for disABILITIES has been dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for people with disabilities in the Central Valley. Through programs, equipment loans, and community support, the organization empowers individuals to live more independently and fully.
