Saturday Rodeo Recognizes Day Of The American Cowboy

Living up to its Cowboy Capital of the World designation, there will be some fun events staged in Oakdale on Saturday, July 27 to celebrate the National Day of the American Cowboy.

The annual Oakdale Ranch Rodeo is scheduled at 5 p.m., with sign-ups starting at 4 p.m., at the Oakdale Saddle Club Rodeo Grounds, 1624 E. F St.

Events will include ranch sorting with a two person team, trailer loading and doctoring with four per team, branding with three per team and sort and doctor with three per team. Unlimited entries; teams can participate in as many events as they wish, with separate entry fees for each of the competitive events. There will be cash awards presented and a buckle awarded to High Point winner. The cowboy competition is presented in cooperation with the Western States Ranch Rodeo Association.

Also, in celebration of the National Day of the American Cowboy, local authors Major Mitchell and Wiley Joiner will be at Bucksworth Western Wear, 2100 E. F St., Oakdale, at the far east end of town, to sign and talk about their books. The event is set from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Mitchell offers 10 Western novels to choose from, including Dona, Dusty Boots, Mokelumne Gold and Manhunter.

Joiner’s latest offering, Black Bart’s Resting Place In Everlasting Sleep, contains documentation of Black Bart’s grave. Other books are Cattle, Cards, Barbed Wire and Gold, along with California’s Golden Glory Days.
