A mid-afternoon incident at Woodward Reservoir, north of Oakdale, on Sunday saw several emergency crews respond to what was initially believed to be a rescue effort.

However, it later turned in to a recovery and the victim’s identity was released by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office. Authorities named the victim, who went under the water and did not resurface, as Carlos Lopez, 53, of Santa Rosa.

The initial call came in Sunday, July 9 about 3:15 p.m.; Modesto Fire Department Engine 29, Water Rescue 28 and Battalion Chief 5 all responded to the scene. Also assisting were the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department and air support unit Reach 2.

Authorities said the report came in as a male going under the water and not returning to the surface; the search lasted more than an hour before it was classified as a recovery as opposed to a rescue.

The body of the victim was later located and the case turned over to sheriff’s department officials.
